Dear Madam/Sir,

 

 

As Chairman of the Scientific Council of the European Research Council (ERC), I am pleased to invite you to read the attached brochure which explains the role of the Scientific Council and the launch strategy of the ERC.

As you may be aware, the European Research Council will be set up under the Senventh Framework Programme of the European Community, which will be adopted later this year. A first call for proposals (ERC Starting Grants) will be launched in late 2006 or early 2007.

The ERC will be the first pan-European funding agency for frontier research offering talented researchers the support and visibility required to strengthen Europe´s scientific creativity and performance, which are also prerequisites for economic innovation and competitiveness. It will be an autonomous organisation under the scientific governance of an independent Scientific Council. Starting as well as fully established independent investigators located in or moving to any EU or Associated State, whatever their nationality, will be able to compete for ERC grants, with scientific excellence as the sole criterior for funding.
